Earlier this week, the EPA decided to lower the fuel-economy miles per gallon rating for the 2012 BMW 328i eight-speed automatic. BMW is not terribly happy that the regulator lowered the grade after conducting its own battery of tests..
Dropped both highway and city
According to a BMW spokesman, the car maker has been ordered by the EPA to lower the miles per gallon numbers for the 2012 BMW 328i automatic. Only last week, the sedan commanded 24 mpg in town and 36 mpg on the highway. Today, it can only achieve 23 and 33.
Tests done by EPA
Every automaker does a lot of tests that the EPA demands to determine what the gas mileage rating is for the automobile. Sometimes the EPA does a second test just to make sure while other times it will just accept the automakers' numbers. After doing its own test, the EPA decided that the BMW car needed a decrease.
Testing not common among all
Only about 15 percent of all U.S. vehicle models really get a special test done by the EPA, according to Car and Driver magazine.
Unexpected enormous drop
Typically, when the EPA makes a change to a fuel economy rating, it is not that low. This is something that BMW said surprised it. It is a huge drop when the rating drops by three mpg. Minor changes were anticipated, as the fine print disclaimer claims it will do.
What you should know about BMW 238i
An eight-speed transmission - operated by paddle shifters in the steering wheel - can be found in the 2012 BMW 328i. It also gets 260 lb-ft of torque with its 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder 240 horsepower motor.
What are the EPA standards?
BMW did the first test in Munich. An official EPA fuel-economy test has to be done with controlled conditions on an indoor track. It goes through five cycles such as city, hot city, cold city, highway and aggressive highway. All additional variables are kept constant including the type of gas put to the car for the test.
No changes for lower rating anticipated
BMW will not be able to re-test the car until its 2013 design is ready. Until then, the lowered rating will stick for the 328i automatic. The six-speed manual shift version, however, retained its 23/24 rating. There is still something to be said for the human touch.
